Clifton City-Greenlee County Library

For two years, I lived in the high chaparral of Greenlee County Arizona, working as director of the library in a county the size of Rhode Island. It was a challenging and fascinating time, and an extreme contrast to the life I had known growing up in New England.

The library worked closely with local agencies and volunteers to provide services far beyond basic library offerings to become part of the safety net in a culturally diverse area facing rapid change, especially as the price of copper started to dip in the late 1970s.

I also taught English composition as an adjunct instructor at the local community college and was instrumental in bringing arts and humanities programming into the community through national and state grants programming.
